ThermoWood® – Assembling and processing

Hand Fastening

In hand fastening of Thermowod® predrilling the holes and using stainless steel, self- tapping screws with a coarse are the most appropriate. If nails are used, they should be placed 7 cm from the edge of the board and for the last 2-3 mm it is recommended to use a nail punch. A small pneumatic nailing machine is useful but the pressure must be adjusted.

Thermowood® can be glued, but gluing and compression time is longer than in untreated wood. It is important to follow the glue manufacturer’s guidelines.

The deck should always be kept off the ground to better improve the circulation. It is also recommended to keep at least 6 mm gap between the boards. This translates into better circulation and drainage of rainwater. To allow the movement, the gap between ends of the boards should be for 1-2 mm.

In cladding, proper ventilation is vitally important. The gap between the ground and the lower edge of the cladding should be about 30 cm.

Wood processing

In milling of ThermoWood®it is important to use sharp blades to ensure good results. The light, fine- grained saw dust is readily extracted with no adhesion to the cutter blades.

Planing gives the surface smoothness. It can be done by a planning machine or normal planer. When using a planing machine, the speed should be adjusted  to less than with untreated wood.

If the quality of wood  planing is satisfactory,  sanding isn’t needed. However, if the wood is sanded, then a use of sand paper is more economical, due to its resin free process.

Thermowood®can be as easy sawed as ordinary wood. It is recommended to use sharp blades, a fine toothed saw and the wood should be fed slowly.
